Ohara Museum of Art
The Ohara Museum of Art was established in 1930 by Magosaburo Ohara, an entrepreneur who was active in a wide range of fields based in Kurashiki, in commemoration of the painter Torajiro Kojima, who had died the previous year.
Magosaburo, who was also a collector of Japanese art, highly appreciated the talent of his close friend Torajiro and his sincere attitude toward art, and encouraged him to go to Europe three times. While working hard on his art, Torajiro, with Magosaburo's consent, devoted himself to the task of selecting European art works by mobilizing all his Japanese senses.
The choice of Torajiro, who had the spirit of the Meiji era, was a serious contest between the senses of the East and the splendor of Western art. He carefully selected El Greco, Gauguin, Monet, Matisse, and other works that still form the core of the Ohara Museum of Art, and brought them to Kurashiki. The collection of Chinese and Egyptian art that he made at the same time shows the sentiment of Torajiro, who was troubled by the gap between East and West and wanted to get closer to the origin of culture.
The Ohara Museum of Art continued its active activities in Kurashiki, expanding its collection to include modern and contemporary Western art, modern and contemporary Japanese art, and the work of artists involved in the folk art movement. It has become known throughout the world as a unique private comprehensive art museum that displays a unique personality backed by the sentiments of the Japanese people.
